In this centenary year of commemoration we are indebted to Joe Pettifor who has produced this pamphlet about our parishioners who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War. The short biographical notes animate the names engraved on the War Memorial in All Saints' and give us a sense of connection. It is also our happy duty to remember those who returned home, most notably, Robert Dixon, awarded the Military Medal.

There is something about death on active service which makes it different from ordinary death in the normal course. Soldiers seem to accept it courageously and those they leave behind are also conscious of a light of sacrifice and honour. This must add to their fortitude but cannot in any way lessen their pain.

"Dying for a noble cause is not the worst thing that can happen - being forgotten is"

We Will Remember Them.
